Im going to get gifts now because Im staying in the house and Im going to fix it up.. Just landmarked. And when they werent in the house, they would go and buy them at the stores, and there was always lilacs in the house. I mean, you talked about it, when you were a kid, that it was this big house that you would see when you were out on, Daller: Its a part of the history of Staten Island. And with the Air Force, I enjoyed every minute. You made enough money. Daller: See, now you learned about kitchens. No, its not something were talking about right now. It would have been spectacular but greed set in, and thats what they did. And Id go in and Id buy all the liquor with those stamps. I think so. Burke: Yes. Like there was old Greek, like the Parthenon, the Greek templesoh, it was beautiful. But, with that money, I paid this house off. And then Id been in Europe all that time. Yes. Daller: Well, he said, he felt that house had spirits in it. Do you remember that? Daller: That was the house that had ghosts. The one in particular, United States Steel [Corporation]. Theyre all gone. All that gorgeous porcelain, like the Flower Sellers Childrenits a big piece like that. So I said to her, I said Bess, the only thing Ill save your house is a bulldozer! And my sister, Bess, she was married to Walter, her husband, who was in the Navy. Burke: Anyway, she was well known here on Staten Island. And my father died, and we were all very young. [laughs] And I lived there for a long time. It was so overgrown in the front yard and everything. And Im looking at looking at it and I said, You know, thats the last house. How the hell they got to the right people, I dont know. Right across the creek. And then finally she sold the house and she bought a beautiful place in Greenwich Village and moved to Greenwich Village. I dont want you in this house. And he said, George, Im selling my business. Because you never finish, youre always finding something to do. Then I got shipped to Europe. As a young adult, he joined the U.S. Air Force and served in the medical department, spending time in locations across Europe and Alaska. Theyd come out and Id say, Look, I can get you this. Daller: Because you might remember, he was away for so many years. But when they were building houses, if you had a third story, your taxes went out of sight! Its still that way. Yes, but that was all the legal aspect of it. Q: What do you think the role of this house is, in this part of Staten Island? George, now in his eighties, donated the house in exchange for a life tenancy, which has made living here a lot easier. Daller: Thats been acquired over the years. They were gorgeous. But when he was in Europe, he rode. Burke: So I dont know if that was a ghost. And people were coming from all over the island. I restored that, and that was an old mansionan old pillar-fronted mansionlooked like the house, similar. It was a mess. So whenever the big surgeons traveled, I always traveled with themtraveled all over Europe. And he said, Mom, Ill move in to the other part of the house. That was the mansion. And we were great gardeners and she had always come over in the spring, and she gave me little cuttings of all the flowers, and the different things. Now the little girl had to be moved to Wall Street. Well, I was born on Staten Island. And, then I gotwhod I get from the city? Burke: Ed. Most recent obituaries in New York. Burke: I was thinking about getting a big home, having a home, and what I would want in itthe paintings, what kind of furniture, carpets, everything. So I figured, oh, shit. Nobody wants to do that. Things like that? And that guy, look at the size of that house he just built. But, thats what I did. But what was really, really bad was people, if they were going to build a garage, or they were going to build something, theyd go to that big, beautiful mansion and rip the siding off of it and take it back to build what they want to build. Burke: Well, the house, actually, from the outside, is aoh, shitthe name of it went right out of my head. But how many people really have a sense of history anymore? They cant just say, The doors are open for anybody, just walk in! Somebody will walk in, and say, Oh, I like those chairs, pick them up, and take them, and theyll be gone. So everything just kept going off and someone would have all of this, someone would have all of that. George Burke was born on Staten Island and grew up in Annandale before moving to Florida with his family. Ill make you the drapes. The drapes are still up there. And whats going on up the street here now? And then I decided Id get involved again with things that are going on. Got a good price for a couple of other real estate pieces that I bought and fixed up and sold. But I still have a lot of it. You are to get out. And a couple of my friends came as bartenders for me. And I lived there for quite a few years. And this is Sarah Dziedzic. Or is that real? That was real. So while I used to work then with them, and then I decided, this is not for me. What will I do? And I had two or three other girls that were there. Its all part of history, and theyre just destroying it every way they can. They cant do anything. And when I seen it all over there, and when I seen the British people were poor as church mice, they were selling everything. He worked by himself. Theres a ghost in there. And I said, Well, I dont believe in ghosts. And I want my painting. And have something on a loop in here, which weve been trying to do, where itll be an audio and a video of him discussing the house, because nobody knows it any better than he does. And then, on the side of the house in the back, there was a little piece built out. But anyway, she said, Im not going in the house. The only thing that will save this house as a bulldozer! [laughs] But anyway, I saved it. Burke: After I had the house, then I got the big pieces of furniture. When did it start to feel done? Anyway, I said, Oh boy, did I have a scary dream. I told her my dream. Half the railings were gone off the porch, and the column was falling over, and, oh, Jesus. Because, now, they cant tear it down. And I had a beautiful restaurant and a bar connected to it. Its a beautiful house. And there was a big flight of stairs that went across the big porch across the front of the house, posts. Q: Can you tell me about studying interior design? I mean, this whole ceiling was shot. Burke: Oh my god. Developers. Thats what I was. Daller: And he formed the board in order to support the house. But, Q: Let me ask you some more about the items that you collected when you were. Daller: We really cant give you any details on that. She lived up on Lighthouse Hill. No, it wasnt that. Burke: Let me think of how all that started. And if they were there and I could see them, and I could ship them free because the government had to ship it for me, and I had my sisters, who would store them for meI had had a great opportunity to pick up all this stuff that was beautiful, get it for nothing, and the government ship it back for me, and my sisters would keep it until I got a place to put it. We are a big family. Burke: Well, most of the stuff in the house, he worked with me. I mean, Captains Quarters, instead of building all those condos down there, it would have been beautiful to have another stately home there. So Id go up there and Id say, Ed, Adriana, what do you got? Well, we got some old fabric, out of date fabric. Give it to me! And Id take it. Daller: And when he wasnt doing that, he was horseback riding because he loved to ride and thats kind of segued himself to the Seguine House and to Bess. Burke: Greek revival. Burke: Yes, I paid off this house. It has to stay exactly as an old plantation house. Is there anything, you think? Q: Was it Mario that suggested the life tenancy agreement? Id love that old house. I said, But Bess, I said your houseI dont know about saving it. So that makes sense. And, you know, who has that!? Oh, that was the ghost in Tottenville. Daller: Mm-hmm. . And my neighbor across the street, who had lived there forever, she comes over again with a couple of little plants for me. I forgottheres ten acres that is landmarked now. Kitchens were always built in a house outside by themself, and a breezeway going to the house, because the kitchens would always burn down. But it doesnt work that way. Victor. Burke is joined in this interview by his niece, Linda Daller. Q: So what was it like when you had the house finished and furnished? But I restored all that. But Ive got to bring that portrait down and put it above that fireplace and get rid of that painting thats there. And you can put it together and fix it. And thats what this house is. Burke: Well, I was always an antique collector. Burke: Oh, I loved her. And I said, Was that a dream? I was born right in the hospital across the street, and grew up 90% of my time on Staten Island until I became old enough and I joined the military. And it was twice the size of this house. And she was living here all by herself. And thats what I called out for was help. And I had more bargains from Mrs. Murphy. I grew up loving it and always having it, and my mother was great with it. So I went out and I said toI had two roommates, and I said to my roommates, Wheres my box? And they said Oh, well, Sergeant Joiner came in and took it. I said, Oh, no! I went running out. And the only reason why this survived is because nobody wanted the farmhouse! Burke: I never lived in a little small house, I have no idea. Daller: Well, they hope to. I want it now. I could never get it. And then when they decided thatthey owned a beautiful house on one of the Keys in Florida. STATEN ISLAND, NY 10309. He brought a crowd with him and it was just to tell him thank you for everything that hes done. I bet shes there. George Burke. I thought for sure that would never go. But they donated it to the Sisters of Charity, figuring that the nuns could live in that gorgeous mansion. I have questions about closets too! And then you could walk under the porch out into the garden. And I decided, well, Im going to pick up some nice buildings. But they hadnt been there, maybe five, six years, and I guess they decided, Oh! Q: And so, what sort of vision do you have for, you know, the next the next forty years, for how the grounds are maintained and how. Family and friends must say goodbye to their beloved George Burke of Hull, Massachusetts, who passed away at the age of 63, on October 2, 2021. Q: So tell me about what its been like for you to live here. They couldnt. And I had the money to do it, and I said, You know, let me do it.. And even though the house belongs, in essence, to Historic House Trust, they werent reimbursing him for anything. He introduced me all the time tobecause look at look at what he was. What a shame. Take a walk. I said, No, no, Im gonna save this house. He said, Oh! I had all the walls done. It was gorgeous and very ornatewas very, very much like Greek Revival. Yes. Its all stay in here. But I was glad that I got this. And they repaired all these taxis, repainted them, and then sold them all to Cuba. So it took a fortune, but I had it, all that money, to restore the house. Staten Island . And I think we can end there. Q: I wanted to ask, also, theres a painting of you in the house, right? And then the people that moved out left a bunch of old furniture, and these were the two that they left. I traveled all over the world, traveled to Alaska, all over, with the military. And he was stationed here, in St. George, and he would come home and wed live in the house. I bought another restaurant, didnt I? Q: And how did you keep track of all the items in your collection as they were moving from, Burke: Well, a lot of this stuff, I never got back, because once you left it for years and years, you werent going to go back and say, Well, give me that, and give me this. Was it your mother I gave her all the blue and. Burke: To put it backbecause the house was ruined, it was in terrible shape. So most of the stuff is Victorianturn of the century and Victorian. They moved in there, and they lived there. Christ, a good ten, twelve years. Because she begged me. 6389 Amboy Road. Then she got to the point where she couldnt keep it anymore. I wanted to ask about the Equestrian Center. They couldnt handle it, the clientele that came in. But that was a big improvement, putting in the kitchen, because there never was a kitchen in the houseand where the kitchen is now, that was the laundry room. Isnt that a huge house theyre building, you told me? And all this beautiful stuff, I used to put in a big box. Id bring her bottles of whiskey and shed say, Listen, George, Im going to an estate for saleeverything in it is going! And the house was like this, a big piece with two big wings. I think hes given you a great history of what started and, basically, youve talked about his life from the beginning, so, I dont know. That was something that you had restoredis that right? It was unbelievably gorgeous. Its just a shame. Wow, what a great place. I said, now here you are, the woman we always wondered about, asking me if Im interested in saving that house? Then I went looking for the big pieces. Q: So its confidential becauseoh, okay. And in the summer, he sits outside, enjoys the outdoors, enjoys the lawn, the grounds.
